No-Stitch, No-Needle, No-Patch Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens that can cause blurry vision and increase the glare from lights. Over half of all adults develop cataracts by the time they turn 80 years old. Cataracts can interfere with an individual's ability to perform everyday tasks, such as reading, taking medications, climbing stairs, and driving. If cataracts are inhibiting your daily life - or, if they are interfering with the treatment of another eye problem such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy - then cataract surgery is highly recommended. Phoenix Board Certified ophthalmologist Emilio M. Justo, M.D. offers a "No-Stitch, No-Needle, No-Patch" surgical approach for optimal patient comfort. To learn more, please contact the Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center today. We have locations in Sun City, Wickenburg, and Sun City West.
Basics of Cataract Removal Surgery
About Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery involves the removal of the eye's cloudy lens, and the placement of an artificial lens to improve vision and quality of life. To stay on the cutting-edge of technology, Dr. Justo offers the most modern cataract removal technique that does not require the use of needles, stitches, or patches.
In preparation for cataract surgery, Dr. Justo may ask patients to stop taking certain medications to decrease the risk of bleeding. Also, he will take measurements of the shape and size of the eye, and the curve of the cornea; this information helps him select the appropriate intraocular lens implant.
Prior to the surgery, drops are put into the eyes to dilate the pupil. An anesthetic may also be administered to numb the nerves in and around the eye. Dr. Justo makes a small incision on the side of the cornea, and inserts a tiny probe. The probe gently separates the cataract, and the pieces are removed from the eye. After the cataract pieces have been removed, Dr. Justo places the folded intraocular lens implant in the eye. Once it has been properly positioned, it remains in place permanently. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes, and the patient shouldn't experience any pain.
Patients may expect slight sensitivity after the surgery. This usually dissipates quickly, and the patient will be able to see clearly and comfortably. However, for safety reasons, we would like the patient to have a companion escort them home.
Benefits of Fast-Focus Cataract Surgery
Benefits of cataract surgery with Dr. Justo include:
- Most modern type of cataract treatment

- Placement of the Toric intraocular lens implant also corrects astigmatism
- Patients can immediately return home and resume physical activity (e.g., bending and lifting)
Risks of Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries, and in general is very safe. However, as with all eye surgeries, there are a few risks, including post-operative infection, bleeding, inflammation, loss of vision, double vision, and high or low eye pressure. Dr. Justo will discuss all of these concerns during the pre-operative cataract surgery consultation.
